Who We Are

Who We Are

Downtown Church exists to glorify God by creating a radical new community that molds loving disciples of Jesus through the power of the gospel. We are committed to Christ-centered lives where we show others grace and evangelize with authenticity through intentional relationships and faithfulness to showing justice with integrity and respect.

Proclaiming the gospel: Our ministries are centered on proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ as the means of our salvation and the grounds of our sanctification/Christian growth. The gospel declares, “You are worse than you allow yourself to think and yet, more loved and accepted in Christ than you have ever dared to hope.”  The fruit of this message is less of me, more of Jesus living and loving.

Consistent prayer: We desire to be led by the Spirit in every way, thus we engage in consistent prayer to our Father. We passionately bring Him our kingdom-focused requests pleading for his will to be done.

Diverse community: We intentionally fight for our community to reflect every race, age, class and culture represented downtown.  We do so from our staff, to our leadership, to our ministry teams, to our congregation.

Serve: In the gospel God serves us by sending His Son to redeem us through his life, death, and resurrection. We live out of the gospel, responding to God’s radical service to us by showing a reflection of that radical service in out service to others. With gospel generosity and inclusiveness, in the context of relationship, we seek to restore the respect and honor of those made in the image of God by serving them in love.

Disciple-making: We develop and equip others with the gospel, believing the gospel to be the power to convert us and grow us after conversion. Our goal is to equip our body with the gospel to the point where others are also becoming agents of change in downtown and the world.  This is our DNA.

Leadership Development: We identify, train, and equip future leaders through a gospel-saturated message. We focus on the much-neglected fruit of the gospel, namely the tangible demonstration of love and mercy to a broken world. We teach and train leaders in the power of a reconciling God- a God who reconciles all men to Himself regardless of race, class, or culture.

Movement: We play a significant role in God’s movement of creating and strengthening multi–race and class churches in Memphis and beyond. We resource this movement by training, equipping, and sending leaders, hosting interns, onsite seminars and producing resources to aid others in the mission.
