Waiting on God

Passage: Psalm 62

Identity Defined: Identity is that which you give the right to define your self-worth or self-value.

“How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse (3-4).”

“For God alone my soul waits in silence, from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock, and my salvation and my fortress, I shall not be greatly shaken (1-2).”

If your identity is not God:
1) You are a slave to that something.
2) You must look down and judge those who do not share that something.
3) You are either arrogant/prideful for possessing that something, or depressed that it is so elusive and out of reach.
4) You have no peace and are riddled with anxiety, even and especially if you possess that something.
5) Your network of friends is not diverse because that something, not God is your real identity.

If your identity is God:
1) You are not a slave, but free because God already accepts and loves you through the finished work of Jesus.
2) You are not judgmental for you freely admit your own sin and need for and possession of God’s grace.
3) You are humble and loving because God has accepted and loves you through the work of Jesus.
4) You are at peace for God is your Father.
5) Your friends don’t all look like you for you don’t need them too.

I. Culture is fighting to tell you the grounds of your identity.

"For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy day, a sabbath of complete rest to the LORD (Ex. 35:2).”

II. A look at the history of identity: Ancient/Traditional vs. Modern.

A. Ancient/Traditional identity is centered on sacrificing for one’s group.

B. Modern identity is centered on the individual finding his purpose and inner light.

Flaws:
1. Your deepest feelings/desires contradict each other.

2. The modern identity is fragile.

3. Modern identity fragments and tears apart unity.

III. Christian Identity is Freedom and Life.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

“For God alone my soul waits in silence, from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock, and my salvation and my fortress, I shall not be greatly shaken (1-2).”
