Passage: John 11:1–11:44

Life, Death and Hope

“This illness does not lead to death…(4).”

“Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place — the Most High, who is my refuge — no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:9-11

“But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?’(37).”

I. Life is real.

II. Death is real.

“Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died (21).’”

“’But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day (22-24).’”

“…they are no longer bothered by ‘the God question’ as a question because they are devotees of ‘exclusive humanism’ — a way of being-in-the-world that offers significance without transcendence. They don’t feel like anything is missing.” James K.A. Smith

“…but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die (Genesis 2:17)."

III. Hope is real.

“I am the resurrection and life…(25).”

“We love because he first loved us (I John 4:19).”

“…everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die (26).”
