When People Receive the Good News, They Become Members of a New Family

May 21, 2017 Speaker: Michael Rhodes Series: Greyless: A Certain Faith

Passage: Acts 2:41–2:46, Acts 4:31–4:35, Acts 6:1–6:7

Slide 1:  1. When People Receive the Good News, They Become Members of a New Family

Slide 2:  Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. . . 11 both Jews and proselytes . . .  (Act 2:5, 11a ESV)

Slide 3 " devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching . . . and to prayer”

Slide 4: "day by day attending the temple together . . . praising God”

lide 5: 1.     "when they had prayed . . . they were all filled with the Holy Spirit”

Slide 6:        “devoted themselves to koinonia (the fellowship)”

Slide 7  “ devoted themselves to . ..  the breaking of bread”

Slide 8: 1.       “day by day . . . breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts”

Slide 9: “all together” all “of one heart and soul”

Each of these gets a slide:

  1. “had all things in common”
  2. “selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need”
  3. “no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own”
  4. “they had everything in common”
  5. “there was not a needy person among them”

“for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet

Slide: “A new kind of giving is exposed at this moment, one that binds bodies together as the first reciprocal donation where the followers will give themselves to one another. The possessions will follow.  . . What is far more dangerous than any plan of shared wealth or fair distribution of goods and services is a God who dares impose on us divine love. Such love will not play fair. In the moment we think something is ours, or our people’s, that same God will demand we sell it, give it away, or offer more of it in order to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, or shelter the homeless, using it to create the bonds of shared life.” - Willie James Jennings -

Slide: 2. Becoming Family Isn't Easy . . . and Requires Work from the Whole Community

Slide:  Reta Halteman Finger: “Only when ‘the poor’ are ‘the other’- the ‘charity cases,’ those ‘not like us,’- can an organization relegate their care to a committee who hands them some alms on the side.”

Slide:   “And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples . . .”

Slide: 3. Becoming a Family is Part of How God Does Mission

Each of these gets a slide:

  1. “the lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved”
  2. “continued to speak the word with great boldness”
  3. “with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus”
  4. “And the word of God continued to increase . . .the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem . .. a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.”

Slide: “In a crowded city where most people lived marginal and often desperate lives, many cut off from previous kin-groups back on the land, Luke has truthfully portrayed what was probably one of the great attractions of the new movement: the inclusive and joyful daily communal meals held in the next courtyard.” - Reta Haltman Finger -
